Windows 11 24H2 Update is Now Non-Optional

Have you been keeping your computer up to date?  See below for why the latest update is non-optional

Updates Can Often Feel Very In-Your-Face

The Windows 11 24H2 update, released at the end of last year, is a major update that Microsoft strongly recommends due to security issues. While users have been able to delay updates in the past, Microsoft is now making the 24H2 update mandatory. If you haven’t already updated, your computer will soon download and apply the update automatically.

Common Issues with Updates

  • “It doesn’t do anything useful”: Updates often seem pointless because they fix hidden issues or add minor features. However, security updates are vital as they protect against malicious users looking to exploit vulnerabilities. Using outdated software is like not wearing a seatbelt; it’s an unnecessary risk that could lead to serious problems later.
  • “It means I can’t use the computer”: Automatic updates can sometimes be scheduled at inconvenient times. Windows tries to schedule updates when you’re not using the computer, but it can still be disruptive. Fortunately, Windows allows you to configure active hours to avoid time-critical moments.  To do this in Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options and then set the Active Hours.  For Windows 10 users, Start > Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Update and then ‘Change Active Hours’.
